24 and 48 hour Holter Monitor

A Holter monitor is a machine that continuously records your heart’s rhythms for 24 or 48 hours during normal activity.
Your physician may have ordered your Holter monitor test to:
- Diagnose an abnormal heart rate or rhythm
- Diagnose reasons for fainting
- Monitor response to treatment or progress after a heart attack
To prepare for the test:
- Shower or bathe prior to the test
The test is performed by placing electrodes on your chest and attaching them to a small recording monitor. You will carry the monitor with you by using a strap around your neck or waist.
You will be asked to keep a diary of the activities you do while wearing the monitor and note any symptoms you may have. It is important to keep an accurate diary. After your 24 or 48 hours, you will return the monitor.
During the test it is important to have the electrodes firmly attached to your chest. You will not be able to shower or bathe while wearing the monitor. You should avoid electric blankets and metal detectors.
A doctor’s order is required for a 24 or 48 hour Holter monitor.
